Music streaming allows you to listen to music online through mobile apps or browsers without downloading tracks. This saves both the storage space of your devices and time to download the music. However, it requires an internet connection and create an account on those music streaming websites.
According to the Music Streaming Market Size, Share & Trends Analysis Report published in October 2020 by Grand View Research, Inc., apps accounted for 85.2% of the online streaming music market revenue.
There are global and regional players on the music streaming market. They include Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, Deezer, Pandora, Soundcloud, Tidal, etc. According to MIDiA Research Ltd., music streaming services reached 358 million paid subscribers in 2019, and they are projected to have 450 million paid subscribers at the end of 2020. Spotify is the market leader with a market share of 32% by the end of 2019.
There are free and paid streaming music services. While free services have more limitations and feed you ads, paid services offer unlimited song skips, on-demand playback, etc. Besides streaming music on websites, many services offer mobile apps which allow you to cache music for offline playback.
Many services have lyrics so you can sing along. Some offer family plans allowing household members to share an account for some monthly paid streaming.
Some music streaming websites allow you to download music to listen to when you are offline. While most streams are compressed audio ranging from 128Kbps to 320Kbps, some services like Amazon Music Unlimited offer Hi-Res Audio with superior sound quality. Some services like Spotify allow you to try before subscription, while others like Apple Music only offer premium streaming.
Unfortunately, not all streaming music websites offer music or every track from your favorite artists due to royalty issues.
